Johannes Amo-Aye, the inventor of the Low Altitude MAGLEV Axial-Hybrid Wind Turbine (TIDAL), is no stranger to the struggles of living without electricity. Born and raised in Ghana, he experienced first-hand the discomfort of power outages.

“During the 'Dumsor' era in Ghana, going 12 hours and sometimes 24 hours without electricity, will have you assessing a lot about your existence.” – Johannes Amo-Aye, Founder of MINAGIE Energy

The frustration of waiting for utility companies to restore power and the fleeting joy when it finally returned, only to vanish again, led him to question the status quo. Why should others dictate when and how they experienced joy? This questioning and frustration were the seeds that eventually grew into MINAGIE Energy.

The Torchbearers

The team behind MINAGIE Energy is a diverse group of talented engineers hailing from Ghana's prestigious Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology. The team's expertise spans multiple fields including wind energy systems, energy planning, energy policy, engineering materials, marketing, direct sales, and operational risk. Guided by two esteemed Engineering Professors and a passionate Mechanical Engineer, the team is determined to bring a change to Africa’s energy sector.

  • Professor Albert Adjaottor: A Senior Lecturer at KNUST with 20+ years of experience, his expertise lies in producing Engineering Materials from Nano cellulosic sources.

  • Professor Kemausuor: The Vice Dean of the Faculty of Mechanical and Chemical Engineering, KNUST. He formerly served as the Director of The Brew-Hammond Energy Centre. His expertise lies in Bioenergy Technology, Energy Planning, and Energy Policy.

  • Doctor Edem Dzebre: A Mechanical Engineer and Lecturer at K.N.U.S.T. He is a Fellow of The Brew-Hammond Energy Centre, KNUST. His expertise lies in Renewable Energy and Wind Energy Systems.

The Beacon of Light

MINAGIE Energy is born out of a necessity to combat the energy shortage plaguing Africa. According to Afdb.org, a staggering 645 million Africans live with little to no access to modern energy services, with 620 million Africans living without electricity access.

MINAGIE Energy is developing a weather-independent wind turbine that will help raise the electricity access rates in energy-poor communities. The technology is aimed at providing cheaper electricity for homes, schools, rural clinics, and farms, all while helping make the world climate-positive through direct air capture. The aim is not just to provide a solution to the energy crisis but to do so in a way that is sustainable and environment-friendly.

Making a Difference

MINAGIE Energy has already made significant strides in its mission. They have been recognized as African Climate Innovation Winners and AI Builders Garage Winners 2023, reflecting their impactful contributions to the energy sector.

But they are not stopping there. Their goal is to reach out to remote communities where transmission lines have not ventured, providing them with off-grid clean energy access. Each operational TIDAL wind turbine not only brings light to a home but also reduces the concentration of CO2 in the atmosphere through direct air capture systems.

"With each TIDAL wind turbine in operation, we are also reducing the concentration of CO2 in the atmosphere using our direct air capture systems. A win-win for humanity and the planet." - Johannes Amo-Aye
